The Truth on Dermaplaning: 5 Misconceptions About the ‘Cutting-Edge’ Treatment

Dermaplaning facials have gained incredible popularity in the past few years.

We’re not surprised!

This truly-transformational treatment requires little/no down-time and may be performed on patients of all ages and skin types. Dermaplaning is an exfoliation service using a medical-grade scalpel to gently remove the top layer of dull, dead skin cells and vellus hair, revealing a smoother, brighter complexion.

Dermaplaning produces immediate results that enhance clarity, tone, and texture of skin over time. This treatment is ideal for those experiencing mild acne scars, dullness, fine lines, and rough, dry skin.

When performed by your aesthetician regularly, dermaplaning reveals a brighter, healthier complexion, minimizing the appearance of dark spots and fine lines. Your skin care products can penetrate deeper into the skin, and makeup application results in a flawless, seamless finish. Like most things that come into the spotlight, several myths and misconceptions have formed surrounding the scalpel-blade exfoliating treatment. The physicians at Galt Dermatology give their opinion, separating fact from fiction on dermaplaning facials.

#1. Dermaplaning is Dangerous and Will Result in Cuts/Scars on the Skin.

Fiction. Performed with a medical-grade scalpel by a trained and certified aesthetician, dermaplaning is one of the least invasive treatments, removing superficial facial hair and dead skin cells. Most patients describe the sensation they feel during the treatment as a light “tickle” or “brushing” feeling.

While some at-home dermaplaning tools are currently on the market, our physicians don’t recommend DIY dermaplaning. Without the proper tools, skin-prep, and professionally-trained techniques, you have a much greater chance of nicking or over-exfoliating your skin if performing dermaplane treatments on yourself.

#2. Dermaplaning Will Cause Breakouts and Enlarge Pores.

Fiction. Although dermaplaning facials are not typically recommended for patients with active acne, the treatment serves as a wonderful preventative facial to stop new breakouts from forming and to refine the appearance of large, open pores. Removing surface layers of dead skin and vellus hair prevents day-to-day dirt and oils from becoming trapped in the skin, resulting in a lesser chance of breaking out.

To keep the skin healthy and avoid acne breakouts becoming an ongoing issue, we recommend booking routine appointments for your dermaplaning facials every 4-6 weeks, depending on your skin type and sensitivity. To schedule an appointment, click the link here to visit our appointment-booking page.

#3. Facial Hair Will Grow Back Darker and Thicker.

Fiction. Ah, the age-old misconception for facial and body hair. Our physicians nip this in the bud, stating that it is “Biologically impossible” for hair to darken or thicken upon regrowth. Dermaplaning simply removes the ultra-fine, often flesh-toned vellus hair, which never darkens or thickens, regardless. Removing the vellus hair allows the skin to feel softer and appear more luminous and refreshed. The hair will begin to grow back within a few weeks, by which time you can book your next appointment.

#4. Dermaplaning Treatments Shouldn’t Be Performed on Patients With Darker Skin Tones.

Fiction. Patients with darker skin tones are often more susceptible to hyperpigmentation and visible scarring. Dermaplaning is a gentle facial treatment and won’t cause harsh irritation and micro-tears in the skin in the same way abrasive scrubs could.

Dermaplaning is one of the most popular treatments for men and women with darker skin tones, as removing facial hair and dead skin cells will help reduce the appearance of dullness and even overall skin tone.

#5. Dermaplaning is Expensive and Time-Consuming.

Fiction. Au contraire! At Galt Dermatology, a single dermaplaning treatment performed by Marisa Reis-Kahn’s careful, attentive hands is completed in 45 minutes.

The one-time treatment comes to just $120, with the option to add on a result-enhancing facial for a total of $185, or a facial and a chemical peel for a total of $245.

Altogether, even for the complete dermaplaning package, this treatment is one of the lowest-cost facials available. Even better, the facials are only performed every 4-6 weeks to achieve and maintain a beautiful glow!
