Broward Dermatologist Offers Effective Folliculitis Treatments

What is Folliculitis?

Folliculitis is a bacterial infection of the hair follicle that presents itself as a small red or white bump. If left untreated, the infection may spread and worsen over time. Common areas to see folliculitis are the neck, face, armpit, thigh, and buttocks. People who are commonly prone to acne or are overweight are at a higher risk of developing folliculitis.

Folliculitis Causes

Bacteria and fungi are the primary cause of folliculitis. However, they may present themselves as ingrown hairs after shaving or waxing. Yeast infections may also contribute to folliculitis. Other risk factors may include:

  • Wearing clothing for extended periods especially after sweating
  • Impaired immunity
  • Bacteria in saunas, hot tubs, or pools
  • Staph infections

Folliculitis may range in severity and can be diagnosed from mild to chronic. Much of the time, folliculitis will disappear over time on its own. Severe cases may lead to scarring, damage to hair follicles, or boils under the skin.

Folliculitis Treatments

Consult with your dermatologist before self-treating folliculitis to avoid further infection or permanent scarring. It may be recommended to treat stubborn or slow to heal folliculitis with a warm compress, soaps, and an oral or topical anti-fungal prescription. In more severe cases, laser hair removal may be an option.
