Botox treatments have gained massive popularity in the past decade. They are now spoken of and treated as commonly as a trip to the dentist. For some, the thought of Botox still frightens them, and to a degree, we can’t argue with their fear. Not all practices are professionals. If you’re considering Botox to treat fine lines and wrinkles, we highly recommend visiting a Board-Certified Dermatologist. Dermatologists have the most experience and the most extensive training while working directly with Allergan, the only authorized Botox manufacturer.
What Exactly IS Botox?
Botulinum Toxin (Botox) interrupts communications between nerves and muscles, inhibiting contractions of these muscles. As a result, muscles (most commonly in the face) remain relaxed, and moderate fine lines smooth in appearance within days. Botox is also widely used as a preventative measure, as excessive scrunching and facial-muscle contractions may cause lines to form over time.
The most common areas we treat with Botox at Galt Dermatology include crows feet, frown lines, and forehead lines. Dr. Miguel Villacorta is trusted by our incredible patients for his micro-tox injection technique, for a result that leaves you looking flawless…not frozen.
How Long Do Botox Results Typically Last?
Most patients come back into the office for retreatment after 3-4 months, but the results will vary slightly depending on each patient’s lifestyle and metabolism. When Botox begins to metabolize and wear-off, your skin simply returns to the elasticity it had before your initial treatment.
At What Age Should I First Consider Botox Treatments? Are There Any Harmful Side Effects?
The answer to both of these questions is dependent on your own preference. If you are considering Botox for anti-aging treatment or want to take preventative steps to age gracefully, we recommend scheduling a complimentary consultation with Galt Dermatology, Fort Lauderdale.
Botox is an inexpensive and non-invasive treatment that has worked wonders for thousands of men and women worldwide since it was approved for cosmetic use in 2002. The age someone decides to start Botox treatments is dependent on one’s individual muscle contraction and cosmetic concern.
Potential side effects from Botox treatments that are administered and performed by a trained professional are mild and may include
- Temporary bruising
- Headaches and tenderness
- Mild, temporary swelling
Important Dos:
DO heed to all advice given by your dermatologist for proper after-care. Most patients should avoid lying down for 4-5 hours following treatment and avoid strong chemicals or prescription skincare for 24-48 hours.
DO visit a Board-Certified Dermatologist for your Botox treatment. Board-Certified Dermatologists have undergone extensive training and receive regular updates on the latest research. Almost 8 million Botox treatments are performed each year. While we understand that everyone may want a piece of the pie, attending a Botox Party or allowing treatment from someone who is not a professional may pose serious risks.
DO understand that Botox requires “maintenance” touch-ups every 3-4 months as results are not permanent.
DO allow 10-14 days for the full results of Botox to take effect.
Important Dont’s:
DON’T perform intense exercise for 24 hours following treatment. Doing so may cause the injectable to spread to other areas of the face.
DON’T touch or massage the treated area for at least 24 hours following treatment.
DON’T fear muscle movement following treatment. Gently contracting the muscles in the area(s) treated will actually help Botox take effect more quickly.
DON’T “pre-treat” with OTC painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin, as these drugs may increase your risk for bruising. Our dermatologists use specialty needles that are extremely small and narrow and soothe the treatment area with ice after the procedure.
Often referred to as the “lunchtime treatment”, Botox is a simple, convenient and effective treatment to combat the visible signs of aging.
