Skin Cancer Screening And Treatment

Best Skin Cancer Dermatologist In Fort Lauderdale

In the U.S., more than 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. Diagnosis for prevention and early detection is essential.

What Does a Skin Cancer Screening Look Like?

Screening for skin cancer performed by your physician allows for early detection and treatment. Screenings are suggested annually.

Since skin cancers may develop anywhere on the body, your physician will perform a thorough full-body skin exam search of cancerous abnormalities such as:

Before your doctor enters the exam room, you will be asked to undress except for your undergarments and change into a gown. If there is an area on your body that you do not wish to have examined, then please let your physician know. During the exam your doctor will use a dermatoscope which is a special handheld instrument that allows your doctor to better visualize your moles.

If a suspicious abnormality is found, your physician will determine if the spot should be removed, or monitored closely. A biopsy or removal of a small piece of skin may be necessary, and your results will be determined within the following week, with instructions from your physician.

What Does Skin Cancer Treatment Look Like?

If diagnosed, skin cancer treatments will vary and are frequently changing with modern research and developments. Skin cancers on the skin's surface may require a surgical procedure under local anesthetic. More severe cases will require more in-depth treatments, which will be discussed with your physician during your appointment. Extensive methods for treating skin cancers may include:

  • Cryotherapy
  • Excision
  • Curettage and Electrodesiccation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Phototherapy

Preventing Skin Cancer

Though impossible to entirely prevent, implementing some critical tips into your lifestyle and routine may lower your risk for skin cancers. Whenever possible, you should:

  • Use SPF of at least 30+
  • Use sunscreens labeled "Broad-Spectrum."
  • Use water-resistant sunscreens if sweating or swimming
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Avoid tanning beds
