What is Molluscum Contagiosum?
Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral-borne skin infection, causing single or multiple raised papules on the surface of the skin. These infections are contagious and may spread by touch from person to person. Molluscum contagiosum is most common amongst children; however, individuals with weakened immune systems may develop the infection. Genital molluscum contagiosum is usually a result of a sexually transmitted infection.
What Causes Molluscum Contagiosum?
Molluscum contagiosum is spread through direct contact with the virus. Skin-to-skin contact, sexual contact, contact with contaminated items such as clothing, countertops, and sports equipment are responsible for the spread of molluscum contagiosum. Children with molluscum contagiosum may spread the infection when in contact with or playing with other children. The virus does not spread internally but can spread on the skin if the bumps are excessively touched, scratched, or irritated.
Molluscum Contagiosum Treatments
Diagnosis is clinical, but a biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. In time the body will clear the virus. Still, if the infection persists or the patient has a compromised immune system, cryotherapy, laser treatments, prescription, and medical-grade topical treatments may be used. Most treatments are available during your scheduled office visit.
