What is Allergic Dermatitis?

Allergic dermatitis, or allergic contact dermatitis, is the inflammatory reaction to allergens that skin becomes exposed to. Common symptoms of allergic dermatitis are swelling, redness, blisters, and rashes.

Causes and Common Allergens

Patch testing is a standard method for determining the trigger. During a patch test, small amounts of common allergens are applied to the skin on small, tacky strips and removed after a few days. A positive test will result in a small area of irritation on the surface of the skin.

Some of the most common allergens include nickel, synthetic dyes, fragrance, poison ivy/poison oak, latex, and certain medications. Allergic dermatitis may even be a response from overexposure to less harsh substances such as soaps, water, and certain foods.

Allergic Dermatitis Treatments

Treatment options that may be prescribed include topical steroid creams and antihistamines. In more severe cases, oral or injectable corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatory agents may be appropriate. Once the allergen has been determined, patients should avoid contact with the allergen. Your dermatologist will help you to understand any chemical agents that may react with the allergen. Substitutions for cosmetics, cleaning agents, or foods can be suggested with the help of your physician.
