Juvederm vs. Restylane: Which Filler is Better Than the Other?

Juvéderm and Restylane are two common dermal fillers used in the treatment of wrinkles and facial volume restoration. These injectables are not to be confused with muscle-relaxing injectables such as Botox or Dysport.

Juvéderm is owned and manufactured by Allergan, while Restylane belongs to Galderma. Both of these fillers contain Hyaluronic Acid, a skin-plumping compound naturally produced by the body, yet depleting with age.

While both fillers share various similarities, they also have distinct differences. Dr. Villacorta, one of our Board-Certified Dermatologists, has undergone extensive training and used both solutions with hundreds of patients through his years in practice. During your free consultation or appointment, Dr. Villacorta will discuss with you your concerns, and desires, helping you choose the best treatment to achieve your ideal look.

A Brief Overview

Juvéderm and Restylane are injected in-office, being completely non-invasive, and non-surgical procedures. Treatment time varies, as our physicians prefer to spend more time understanding each patient’s desires, and treating the procedure as a craft. Prior to injection, your physician will make temporary markings on the face surrounding the area for treatment. You will be handed a mirror to assess and approve of the suggested treatment before we begin.

The injection itself typically takes less than 5 minutes.

Minor, post-procedure side effects are a possibility, including light bruising and swelling, which usually subside within 24-48 hours. Results are immediate, with no necessary downtime for recovery. Please note that results from dermal fillers are not permanent, but do last anywhere from 6-18 months depending on the product, injection site, and patient lifestyle.

Juvéderm

Today, Juvéderm is offered in 8 different forms, each tailored to treat a specific area of the face. Juvéderm has a base made of a Hyaluronic Acid gel, which temporarily restores lost volume/plumps the skin. Juvéderm formulas have all been upgraded to an XC variation, containing lidocaine which numbs the treatment region, without the need for a topical anesthetic.

Depending on the area, and desires of patients, several syringes of Juvéderm may be required to achieve best results. Typically, the lips need a single syringe, whereas the cheeks could take 2-3 for a natural, contoured result.

Juvéderm results may last up to a year depending on various factors. The most popular area for treatment with Juvéderm is to plump and contour the lips.

Restylane

Restylane is currently sold in 6 different forms. This dermal filler also is made of a Hyaluronic Acid base, and has a wider treatment region than Juvéderm. Restylane may be used to restore volume to the hands, and plump hollowing under eyes. Restylane Lyft is a popular choice to add volume to the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. Usually, Restylane treatments last about a year which is similar to Juvéderm.

Additional syringes may be required to achieve your optimal results. In some cases, this may mean an additional syringe/area in comparison to your treatment with Juvéderm.

Other Treatment Options

Galt Dermatology also offers Sculptra injectables.

Sculptra is distinctly unique from all other injectable treatments. Rather than using Hyaluronic Acid to plump the skin, Sculptra, a Poly-L-Lactic Acid stimulates your own collagen production, slowly restoring volume through several treatments over time. A series of 3-5 treatments every 6 weeks is ideal until the desired result is achieved.

Sculptra results are unlikely to be noticed immediately, but are more subtle and longer-lasting than any other volume-restoring treatment. Typical results from Sculptra treatments last around 2 years.
